LAUTECH: THE WAY FORWARD (part 4)

LAUTECH: THE WAY FORWARD (part 4)

So far, we have highlighted the grey areas in our university system using LAUTECH as a case study. Now, what are the solutions? On a general note, the Nigerian problem is not so much as identifying problems as it is proffering workable and lasting solutions and actually putting them in motion.

First of all, what do we really want our university to be like? This question is for all, including you reading this post. In a previous post, I made mention of some resources required to drive a university. I would love you to draw up your own list of seven most important resources Nigerian universities are in dire need of.

Also we did mention some points needed to put in place a structure that will serve our university system. Could you also draw your own list to include other necessary factors not listed in mine? That way you will be contributing to developing the system in your own little way.

As you might have already noticed, the solution lies in finding a system that will work for us.

These are some of the things I will recommend (feel free to add yours):

  •  Government should allow the private sector to fund universities that are government owned.
  • The involvement of Government in the running of the affairs of the university should be extremely low and nothing political. The government should use the necessary organs, like the ministry of education, to address perceived troubles.
  • The National University Commission (N.U.C.) must rise to the occasion and perform as the regulatory body for operating and running of the universities. The Government must provide for the N.U.C. all it needs to function maximally by giving it a free hand (under the ministry of education, of course) and funding it adequately.

When the N.U.C. is alive, issues such as POST-UTME, number of candidates to be admitted by each university in a given year and other related issues will be taken care of.

I have not referred directly to LAUTECH, but have given general solutions to relieve the university system of its ailment. These will fit perfectly well into the LAUTECH situation.

One more post, and we are concluded.

To be continued.
