When u tells somebody u are a Geologist, the first thing that comes to their mind is oil and gas. Geology is more than oil and gas. Most of our undergraduate enter university to study geology so that they will get job in the oil and gas industry. Funny enough, such thought did not cross my mind during my days in the university. With time I got to realize there are many areas were geology can impact our economy; from hydrogeology, to solid mineral etc. So you see Geologist can do more.
Sadly enough there are not many functional professional bodies to help our undergraduate in the pursuit. There are many international bodies and organization and lot of info oon the web but because of laziness, finance and other factors these students cant access valuable resources.
In my days in the university, I tried registering many student to be members of SEG ( Society of exploration Geophysicists) but many were just lazy.
I think we need more functional professional bodies not moribund bodies like we have many.
