Good parenting style and proactive skills should be included in family syllabus, in order to counteract all the shallow values our children are exposed to through the media and their daily experiences.
This is why it is very important to teach kids the values early in their lives. The early this is done the better. They will have no better choice than pass it on to the next generation. Our society is a reflection of the type of values instilled in the children.
How then can we pass good family values to our children?
Teach the values to your children: Parents are the child’s first teachers. Values become daily habits when they are properly instilled in young children. Teaching them good values early is a proper thing to do. They will become part of their daily life which they will learn and keep until they grow old. Start while they are young so that they will develop in themselves values in a natural way.
Set good examples: Children learn better by what they see than what they hear. No learning experience is more powerful than setting good examples. That is why the best way to pass good values to them is to always set good examples for them to follow. Whatever worthy attributes you desire for your child to acquire, practice them yourself. Let your child witness you being trustworthy, compassionate, loyal and goal-oriented. Very soon you will begin to see yourself (your lifestyle) in your children.
Through Open conversation: Talk about your positive family values. Open conversation is a concrete way to teach. Discussing positive values, and why practicing them will serve your child well in his life. Be open to questions from your child and take the time to provide thoughtful answers.
Through expectations: Children instinctively live up to your expectations. Don’t tease or belittle your child, with respect to negative values, in the misguided notion that he will grow up to be the opposite of the image you project. Tell your child you are proud of him for his efforts, even when he does not succeed. He will grow up to make you proud.
