WHAT IS ORGANIC FOOD?

I was surprised when I saw on the notice board of my university an advert to join the organic farmer’s society, for a country whose citizens can hardly feed themselves, I think organic agriculture on a large would be trying too hard to look like the west. But that is just what I think and I am entitled to my opinion, since the trade is here to stay we might just learn what it is all about.

Organic agriculture in simple terms is a form of food production that avoids the use of artificial materials as much as possible in its production. Artificial materials might be antibiotics in the case of livestock production and fertilizers in crop production. One might be tempted to say that his/ her grandfather is qualified to be called an organic farmer and my answer would be in the affirmative.

Organic agriculture goes further to use the much recently well researched field of ethno veterinary medicine to cure sick animals; ethno veterinary medicine is a field that involves the use of herbs to cure sick animals. Because it is opposed to fertilizer use for crop production, compost and other forms of manure are used to make the soil more fertile.

In organic farming some animal rights like not caging birds are also implemented, in addition the feed that the animal consumes is also monitored to be from organic sources. Foods from organic sources are believed to be healthier as they contain less or no remnants of pesticides, antibiotics and other chemicals.
