Are you aware that meningitis is surely the most alarming illness in the UK? I never knew it was common in Nigeria until when I went for my youth service. I was posted to the North and while there some doctors came and wanted us to take the meningitis vaccine. Having never heard of it before, I wondered but I decided to just take it. Gosh, it was very painful. My arms was like paralysed for about two days. Though I never wish to take it again but it sure will help me in the future.
Although rare, it is very serious and can be fatal. It responds to urgent treatment with antibiotics, and if quickly treated, most recover completely. One reason why it is so worrying is because it can begin like flu or other viral illnesses. The symptoms are variable and the disease can progress very quickly. Here is what to look out for, not all of which will be present at one time.
High fever, severe persistent headache, neck stiffness, dislike of bright light, joint pains, vomiting, drowsiness or change in consciousness, dark red or purple rash that does not appear when pressed. The rash, both in babies and older children may be the last sign to appear.Other possible signs are refusing feeds, pale, even grey colour, rapid breathing, unresponsiveness, unusual ddrowsiness or difficulty in awaking, irritable high pitched whimpering cry, stiff neck, bulging fontanelle (soft spot on the head).
If you suspect it in your child or ward, take them for medical help immediately. Call an ambulance if necessary.
