Votes don’t count in Nigeria elections. Even though its suppose to be the determining factor in most elections
In Nigeria’s case, the style of democratic politics is characterized by internecine game, lack of transparency, accountability, innovation, genuine transition through ‘free and fair’ elections, even distribution of social amenities, political equalization.
The nation’s democracy has also been bedeviled by cries of marginalization, youths restiveness, fraud and economic crimes or sabotage, religious intolerance in most cases, godfathers, low ebb of development, political apathy expressed by the governed and a host of what l call ‘political evils’ which cannot ensure achievement of desired high level of advancement in our political and socio-economic spheres as a people. This is the trouble with Nigerian democracy and this is also the trouble with democracies in Africa.
We cannot say that our politicians are not knowledgeable people so that one can believe that this is the reason why development is slow in our various levels of government, but we must agree that some of our leaders and politicians have not allowed the principle of altruism to guide their philosophy of leadership. Yes, as political animal, every man wants life fulfillment or self actualization of his live dreams, and altruism does not estrange oneself from the pursuit of personal goals. But in the eyes of a true and world class leader, and one, who has come to take his people away from economic and socio-political doldrums, will pursue collective goal and development of his people with sincerity, patriotism and priority. A wise leader will be ashamed and would not want to see rot and state of decay around him.
