I like to consider myself an expert in relationships (although I’m sure many people would disagree). How did I acquire such expertise? Can you guess? No, not by dating every Tom, Dick or Harry that came up to me on the road. My technique was much simpler, and dare I say, genius.
Yes, that’s it- observation.
Being younger than virtually every one of my friends had its draw backs but it certainly had its advantages. For instance, I got the chance to look at the flops that are their relationships and say, when I grow up, I am not going to be that dumb.
What I am about to write is so obvious that I almost feel stupid writing this. Almost. Unfortunately, the truth is that as obvious as these truths are, many people just don’t realize them which makes me wonder if I was born on a different all-too-obvious-universe and they were born on the naïve universe. Whatever the reason, here are ten obvious truths about relationships that everyone should know:
- Not everyone that says I love you means it! Ladies (and sometimes gents), sometimes, I love you is code for ‘I was just trying my luck and you were silly enough to say yes.’
- While it is tacky to meet someone for the first time and say I love you, it’s even STUPIDER to believe it.
- Trying to change the other person just doesn’t work! If it did, there would be no unhappy marriages.
- If you’re waiting for the perfect person, you’ll be waiting for a long, long time!
- Love is not an illusion, not a fairytale and certainly not the answer to your life problems. Finding someone won’t make you happy if you’re naturally miserable.
- If you’re a gold digger, say it proudly. Let’s have more dignity than to hide behind the ever annoying ‘love’ cloud when you marry the chief that’s eighty years older than you.
- Relationships are about sacrifice and compromise, if you’re looking to get your own way, you’re wasting your time.
- Serial dating is a waste of time. There’s no point in dating someone for the fun of it. If you’re looking for fun that’s why you have friends!
- Men are from Mars and women are from Venus. You speak different languages. Learn them!
- And finally, perhaps the most obvious truth of it all, Love is not enough. All relationships need a healthy amount of trust, communication and compromise if they are going to work!
