The annual Osun Osogbo festival is celebrated in the month of August with visitors from everywhere around the globe coming to pay homeage to the river goddess.
The Osun river flows from Igede Ekiti through Osogbo, according to history Timehin a hunter coming from Ipole Ijehsa a town between Ilesha and Iperindo during one of his hunting expeditions was in search of water which brought him to the river banks
In the process of cutting a tree it fell and broke one of the river goddess pots. This made the goddess call him eyin oso igbo gbogbo meaning witches of the forest from were the name Osogbo was coined.
Traditions acclaim her the goddess of fertility, protection and blessings. She possessed the ability to give children (through birth) to barren women and power to heal the sick and the afflicted by means of her medicinal water from the river.
