LAUTECH: THE WAY FORWARD (part 2)

LAUTECH: THE WAY FORWARD (part 2)

Continuing from where we stopped in the previous post, we have established some generally lacking resources in the typical Nigerian University. We want to go on from there to establish a solution using, LAUTECH as a case study.

Of course, most, if not all, of the aforementioned resources should be made available to every citizen of the country. But the point is, even if these resources will not be available elsewhere they should be provided for in the university environment. It is from the university that change will spring up for tomorrow. If the children of today’s university system are exposed to such an environment conducive for learning, they will perform better mentally, have far more positive impact on the society and they will be challenged to make the country a better place.

No meaningful or sustainable development can take place without education. It therefore implies that no country can become better without a corresponding better education sector especially the university. While it is good to pursue and lay the foundation for development through economic and political strategies, only a good education system and its products can drive and sustain it.

As a result, ASUU/SSANU and other pro-education bodies should be concerned about building a structure which will effectively power the needed change in our Nation. To do this we will need to:

  • Revise the National Policy on education.
  • Set minimum requirements for a university to exist.
  • Define a proper regulation body (not like the present day toothless NUC) which will not only accredit courses, but also the university and its policies.
  • Define the role of government in the University structure.
  • Define how the university operates and is funded.

Most universities today operate as though there were no written guidelines that dictate how things should be done and who or what determines what.

That is the problem LAUTECH is now facing…

To be continued.
