She stood there as she watched him pull out his passport from his jacket and hand it over to the immigration officer. The airport seemed to be very busy on that day. So many people were traveling to different parts of the world.
“I’ll be back soon baby” he said with a wink in his eyes, as the tears flowed down her eyes. When? She thought . She had a strange feeling she may not see him for a very long time. What could she possibly do about this? Absolutely nothing. He had to go to school and she had to wait for him. How were they ever going to make this long distance relationship work?
Everyone hates the idea of long distance relationships, however many are stuck in it. So when you are faced with one, it’s important that we know that the key to long distance is keeping that special somebody close to your heart. One may be so far away, and yet so near;
- Bridge that communication gap. Many people don’t know this, but successful long distance relationships are built on a solid line of communication. When communication is all you have, for a very long time, you hold it dear to your heart and cherish it. Technology has made this so much easier now with Skype, emailing, blackberry, phone technologies etc. Now there’s no excuse for silence. Gone are the days when all we had were letters in the P.O Box and a few expensive calls. Things are a lot more different now.
- Share special moments like you were together; taking birthdays, anniversaries, special occasions etc seriously. Celebrate together sending gifts and cards.
- Just as in all relationships, keep no secrets. Discuss openly about all things and have a genuine interest in your partner’s activities.
- Try to be as independent as possible. The last thing you want is to have to rely on a person of the opposite sex to help do certain things for you like; driving, cooking your meals, cleaning up, buying gas into your car etc.
As much as possible, try to avoid long distance relationships, they’re not the healthiest of relationships, but if you find yourself in one, it certainly isn’t the end of the world. You can still make it work and actually enjoy it
