The new year’s day is the day that marks the beginning of a new calendar year—an event usually well celebrated in many ways all over the world. New year comes with great expectations and hopes, it is to many, a new chapter in their lives and an opportunity to refresh and make a personal change.
New Year’s resolution; a decision made at New Year to do or stop doing something; considered a time for a fresh start has become a rather popular idea. Most individuals use this time to make personal goals they wish to accomplish in the coming year, make projects, or reform a habit; a change in lifestyle interpreted as being advantageous. These resolutions range from wanting to improve finances, be a better spouse or parent, to wanting to help others.
However, this year, one must avoid making resolutions just for the sake of it, avoid making the same resolutions that did not succeed the previous year, and avoid making unrealistic or unobtainable goals. This year, one must commit to making resolutions that are easy to achieve and that are long-term.
This new year also, one should consider putting God first in everything as only He has the power to make us achieve anything positive. It is only He who can assist us to make our individual selves better before we make our society stress-free and problem-free. We must love God and be willing to do the same to a neighbour.
One must resolve do his or her very best to avoid carrying over worries, fears, concerns and anxieties of the previous year into the new one, but should instead, rely on the loving kindness, mercies and protection of the Father who is ever faithful and willing to satisfy our greatest yearnings. One must be ever optimistic.
According to the wise Mahatma Gandhi, the seven deadly social sins which plague societies at large are; politics without principles, wealth without work, commerce without morality, pleasure without conscience, education without character, science without humanity and worship without sacrifice. This year, these problems can be tackled but it begins with each one of us to make the bigger change, after all, it takes little drops of water to make an ocean.
This year, take a conscious step to write out a plan or a goal(s), talk to the Lord about it (them), and work towards achieving it (them), taking only the directions from the Holy Spirit.
This then can be one’s own little way of making the new year count.
