Is there really danger in having a mentor? What are the dangers associated with mentorship? We are going to deal with these and more other things in this article.
Who is a mentor? This can be defined as an experienced and trusted adviser. Someone, somebody can look up to for guidance and advice. Disciple is the one being mentored.
It is a very good advantage for one to have a mentor but there are still some dangers associated with it which can be detrimental to one’s life. I have found out that many disciples look up so much on their mentors, they are more or less like, this is the Jesus I can see now, so let me try and follow his footsteps. You see this disciples dancing to the tune of their mentors even when he is falling into pit.
A woman was trying to correct his child one day. The child refused to take the advice, he stood firm on the notion he has concerning the issue his mum was trying to correct. The surprised mum asked why he wouldn’t take his mother’s correction; he blatantly told her that his aunty said it shouldn’t be so.
To this child, the aunty is the one he can look up to, every other thing that comes after his aunty is subordinate. Now assuming the aunty is the type that follows men around and commit all kinds of atrocity, what do you think will be the fate of this youngster? There are no two ways about it, the child will copy everything and before you know it the parents will be unable to control him.
Someone that is born to be an academician but has a musician as a mentor what do you think will be the fate of the disciple? Because he likes everything about his mentor, he will also like to adapt to music, his initiative might be shifted from academics to music.
And what do you think will happen to a godly child that has an armed robber as a mentor? I believe the answer to this is very simple. An adage said birds of the same feather flock together. If he doesn’t cut off from him he will surely in one way or the other be influenced.
Let us be mindful of who we look up to for advice and guidance. Above all, God is the ultimate MENTOR we can always have.
