Essay Writing

Essays are important i’m sure we’d all agree, whether as students or  professionals. The  thing is, for most of us that is, it’s the first sentence that has us stomped. We have the general idea especially when presented with a topic but we just don’t know where to start or more precisely what to start with, as an opener.. Ironically, once you start the rest flows, usually. So how do we face the necessary task of writing not just an essay but a good one?

It really helps if you break down your essay. An essay is broken down majorly into 3 parts:

  • The introduction
  • The body
  • The conclusion

The introduction is usually brief, not more than a paragraph long. Usually what is contained here are definitions, if required(the topic will tell). Also a brief history might be necessary(also dependent on the topic and the type of essay). The importance of the introduction cannot be overstressed. A boring introduction might prevent the rest of your essay being read.

Then comes the body which is the main part of the essay. This part comprises of all the points needed to buttress whatever is in the introduction. It’s important that the points are well laid and to the point.

Finally, comes the conclusion, just as important as the introduction. Ever read a great book which had a lousy ending? Or watched a really good movie only to come to a crappy ending? Well, this should provide insight on how pertinent your conclusion is. Always make it a practice to reserve a final powerful point to drive home, which  encompasses the introduction and the body.
