Would you agree with me that English as a language both written and spoken is important? It irks me totally when people encourage the use of incorrect grammar all in the name of jest. The reality is language as a tool if not used regularly or properly, like any other tool, will diminish in value. Think of it- our exam questions are written in English Language, our textbooks and newspapers,to mention but a few. If we don’t learn to use proper sentences then how can we communicate effectively?
These fun tips should help you build your vocabulary in no time.
1. Read books: novels don’t only expose you to new words they actually show you the proper way the words can be used. If naturally you don’t like reading start with small books before moving to novels of 400 pages.
2. Watch movies: there is nothing quite as frustrating as knowing a word but not knowing how to pronounce it. Watching movies ensures you hear new words and the proper way the words are pronounced. It’s now left to you to look up the meaning of the word.
3. Practice: I love the little tests at the end of most magazines that check your “word power”. Also practice by deliberately using your newly learnt words in sentences. Ignore your friends when they laugh, they’re bound to.
4. Don’t sop: I’m sure you’ve heard the saying “the day you stop learning is the day you die”. Learning is a lifelong process so don’t think you’ve ever learnt enough. Continue reading, watching and practicing.
Hope this helps.
