Artisan sentenced for theft
A middle-aged artisan, Simon Agile, was Monday sentenced to six months imprisonment by an Abuja Area Court for stealing a car.
The prosecutor, Musa Abdullahi, had earlier informed the court that on October 13, 2009, one Alhaji Suleman reported to the police that on September 28,2010, he gave his car to the accused for repairs and paid him N28,000 for workmanship.
The prosecutor stated further that when the complainant came to take his car from his workshop, he discovered that the accused has stolen the car battery valued at N13,00, adding that the offence is punishable under Section 287 of the Penal Code.
The accused pleaded guilty when the charge was read to him and begged for leniency, saying someone else stole the car battery from his workshop.
The prosecutor urged the court to try the accused summarily under Section 157 of the Criminal Proce-dure Code.
Judge Lawal Manir sentenced the accused to six month Imprisonment with a fine of N2,000
He also ordered the accused to pay N 13,000 as compensation to the complainant.
