Man sentenced for breach of trust
AN Abuja Area Court on Monday sentenced a middle-aged man, Mike Olaleye, to eight months imprisonment for cheating one Sarah Adekpeni of Mpape village.
The accused of Sabo-Wuse, Niger State was arraigned on a two-count charge of criminal breach of trust and cheating, offences punishable under Sections 312 and 322 of the Penal Code.
The prosecutor, Musa Abdullahi, had earlier told the court that on October 10, the complainant reported at the Mpape police station that the accused persuaded her to join his weekly contribution of N10,000, adding that she has saved N290,000 with the accused person.
The prosecutor further stated that efforts to get the money from the accused by the complainant have proved abortive and that the accused converted the said money to his own use.
When the charges were read to the accused person, he pleaded guilty and begged for leniency, saying he used the money to buy a car for commercial purposes so that he can be paying the complainant in instalments but the car was seized by custom officials.
The prosecutor urged the court to try the accused summarily under section 157 of the Criminal Procedure Code.
Judge Lawal Manir sentenced the accused to eight months imprisonment with an option of N2,000 fine.
The judge ordered the accused to pay N290.000 as compensation to the complainant.
