Driver accused of beating Policeman

A    45-year-old driver was yesterday arraigned before an Abuja Magis­trates’ Court for allegedly beating a Policeman on duty at Maitama, Abuja.

 

Ajibo Emmanuel of   Dutsen-Alhaji    was charged with assault, an offence contrary to Sec­tion  265  of the  Penal Code

 

Prosecutor Udeh David told the court that on Feb­ruary 2, one  Corporal Yakubu Ahmed reported at  Wuse  Police Station that while he was con­trolling traffic at Maitama Junction, the   accused contravened traffic rules and he ordered him to stop.

 

He said the accused disobeyed the order and held the policeman by his uniform, thereby engag­ing him in a brawl.

 

When the charge was read to the accused, he pleaded not guilty and the prosecutor asked for a hearing date.

 

Magistrate Musa I. Jobbo granted the accused bail in the sum of N50,000 with a reliable surety in like sum, who must reside within the court’s jurisdiction.
