Forgery can be a very Dangerous

A 21-year-old cleaner, Monday Hussaini, was on Tuesday sentenced to nine months imprisonment by an Abuja Magistrate Court for forging his employer’s signature.

The prosecutor, Adamu Abdullahi had earlier informed the court that on September 29 one Ezekiel Timothy, a staff of Ecobank, Wuse Zone 4 branch, reported to the police that the accused who resides in Bwari area council, presented a N1million cheque with forged signature of his employer, Rex Lawson Hope, to the bank to with­draw the money, adding that he was arrested in the process.

The accused made confessional statement to have committed the crime and two other cheque leaflets with serial number 14983, with an instruction on it to pay Nestle property the sum of N7,100,000 were recovered from him,” the prosecutor stated.

He said the actions of the accused person are punishable under Sections 287, 364 and 95 of the Penal Code.

When the charges were read to the accused, he pleaded guilty and begged the court for leniency, while the pros­ecutor asked the court to try him sum­marily under section 157 of the Crimi­nal Procedure Code.

Chief Magistrate Oyebola O. Oyewumi sentenced the accused to six months imprisonment without fine option on the charge of theft.

The magistrate also sentenced him to two months imprisonment or an option of N2,000 fines on forgery charge and another one month impris­onment without fine option on the charge of attempt to commit offence.

She ordered that the sentenced be run concurrently.
