Furniture maker jailed for receiving stolen property
A 30-year-old furniture maker was yesterday sentenced to two weeks imprisonment by an Abuja Magistrate’s Court for buying 20 cartons of stolen granite wave from one Jacob Philemon of Maitama, Abuja.
Isah Ibrahim of Jabi, Abuja, was convicted for contravening Section 317 of the Penal Code on December 24, 2010.
Police Prosecutor, Corporal Monday Akor, informed the court that on January 10, one Mohammed Ahmed Zakari , a manager of Yaks Solution, Maitama, Abuja, reported to the police that one Jacob Philemon conspired with three others to steal granite valued at N151,200. He said the convict bought the granite from them at thereof N38,000.
When the charge was read to the accused, he pleaded guilty and begged for leniency, saying he was not aware that the granite was stolen.
Following his admission of guilt, the prosecutor urged the court to try him summarily under Section 157 of the Criminal Procedure Code and Chief Magistrate Josephine Obannor sentenced him to two weeks imprisonment or to pay N 1,000 as fine.
