Man remanded in prison over assault
AN Abuja Magistrate Court yesterday remanded a middle- aged man in prison custody for injuring one Lawrence Orawusi of Berger Camp, Kubwa, Abuja.
The accused, Oluwale E. Bello of Aluminiun Village, near Simco hotel, Kubwa, was arraigned on a- two-count-charge of criminal force and causing grievous hurt, offences punishable under Section 265 and 247 of the Penal Code.
The prosecutor, Joseph Onwu, had earlier told the court that on June 26, the complainant, one Lawrence Orawusi reported to the police that the accused criminally used force on him and beat him up.
The prosecutor stated further that when the complainant was running away from the accused to evade the beating, he pursued him with a broken bottle and stabbed him on his back and chest, adding that the complainant was admitted at the Kubwa General hospital for one week as a result of the injuries he sustained from the beating.
When the charges were read to the accused, he pleaded guilty and begged for leniency, saying it was not intentional.
“Since the incident happened, I have been begging him for forgiveness. I even begged him that I would pay the hospital bills but he refused and insisted that we must go to court. I will not do it again,” he said
The prosecutor urged the court to try the accused summarily under Section 157 of the Criminal Procedure Code and as well awarded N95,000 as compensation to the complainant, being the money spent on treatment at the hospital.
Magistrate Grace Eisape Ade-bayo remanded the accused in prison and reserved the sentence to November 2,
She however ordered the prosecutor to produce the receipt of the hospital bill on the next adjourned date.
