Police arrest Hisbah official over murder of girlfriend

A Hisbah official suspected of killing his girlfriend in Kano two weeks ago has been arrested by the police. Dayy-abu Mohammed was arrested yesterday at his hiding place in Zaria, Kano State Commissioner of Police Alhaji Tambari Yabo Mohammed said yesterday.

Mohammed, who is attached to the Kano Municipal command of the state Shari’ah police, Hisbah, was accused of stabbing 35-year-old Hafsat Ibrahim, popularly known as Delu, and had been on the run since the incident occurred. He was since declared wanted by the state Hisbah Board.

Addressing newsmen at the state police headquarters yesterday, CP Yabo noted that the suspect, who allegedly sneaked into the deceased’s room after her father had left the house door open while going for subh prayer to perpetrate the act, had fled to Zaria where he was apprehended by men of the command. He explained that Mohammed was brought up under the care of Delu’s father before he allegedly ended her life on account of her parents’ refusal to approve his marriage proposal to the deceased because of the age differential between them.

While answering questions from newsmen, Mohammed, who said he is 33 years, denied committing the act, saying he got the news of her death from the deceased’s family earlier in the day. “May Allah have mercy on her soul,” he said.

“Since Islamic shari’ah has provided for death sentence to be passed on anyone that kills, I’m ready to face the consequences, bearing in mind that I did not commit the offence. I only decided to bear the burden of the crime to save others from being roped in. I’m grateful to Allah for choosing such a fate for me” he said.
