A 22-year-old youth of Kpana village, Femi Eromosele, has been arrested by the police at Utako Division for allegedly beating his lover, Mrs Busaratu Ligali, a 42-year- old mother to death on New Year’s eve.
A witness, Mallam Bashiru, said the accused who hails from Edo State lived with the mother in an apartment at Kpana village.
He said the woman was a divorcee from Ogun State, who traded in local gin (Ogogoro) and allegedly had a quarrel with her lover which led to a fight.
“The following morning, she told us she was going to her elder sister’s house and didn’t return until we heard the news that she was dead,” he said.
Elder sister to the deceased said Busaratu came to her house with a swollen face after the quarrel and died the third day as she was being rushed to Wuse General Hospital.
The accused, who appeared remorseful, alleged that his lover drank heavily on that fateful day and engaged him in a fight.
“She did not show any sign of sickness before she went to her sister’s house,” he said and expresaed surprise to hear she was dead.
Reacting, Utako Divisional Police Officer, Chief Soperintendent Olugbumi Ogedengbe said the police got information about the incident and swung into action to arrest the accused immediately.
“We have told residents of Utako and its environs to report cases of fighting and battery to the police before it gets out of hand. We don’t encourage fighting because it could lead to death and the accused will be charged as soon as investigations are completed,” he added.
