Scavenger jailed one year for stealing motorcycle
AN Abuja Magistrate Court Thursday sentenced a 19-year-old scavenger to one year imprisonment without an option of fine for stealing a motorcycle from where the owner parked it.
Mohammed Lawal of Phase II, Federal Housing Authority, Lugbe, Abuja, was reported to have stolen the motorcycle on September 30 and was arrested by the police two days after.
Police prosecutor, Yilkudi Dungji, a constable, had earlier informed the court that on
October 2, one Christopher Egbe of Tundun Wada village, Lugbe, reported to the police that a thief stole his motorcycle with registration number QD618GWA from his shop.
“The accused went and stole the complainant’s motorcycle from where it was parked and he was caught with it on October 2 at Tundun Wada junction, Lugbe, “the prosecutor said.
The prosecutor added that a policeman saw the accused pushing the motorcycle along the road and questioned him, adding that when he could not give a convincing account of the motorcycle, he was arrest and taken to the Lugbe Police Division.
“On sighting the motorcycle at the police station, the complainant identified it as his and during police investigations, the accused confessed to have stolen it from where it was parked by the complainant” Prosecutor Yilkudi said.
When the one-count charge read to the accused, he was read to the accused, he pleaded guilty, saying it was hunger that pushed him to the act.
Having admitted the crime, Magistrate Ann Akobi sentenced him to one year imprisonment without an option of fine.
