Trader Jailed 4 days for street fighting

A 30-year-old trader, Okechukwu Odoh, was Tuesday sentenced to  four days imprisonment by an Abuja Magistrate Court for fighting on the street.

Okechukwu   Odoh,   Arinze Chukwu, Anthony Amedu and Obiorah  Ogochukwu   were
arraigned on a one-count charge Odoh of public disturbance, an offence pleads
punishable under Section 113 of the Penal Code.

Prosecutor Adamu Abdullahi, had earlier told the court that on October 16, 2010, the accused to persons engaged themselves in a  physical fighting at Wuse Zone 5 motor park.

When the charge was read to the accused persons, Okechukwu Odoh and Arinze chukwu pleaded guilty and begged for leniency while Anthony Amedu  and Obiorah Ogochukwu pleaded not guilty and requested for bail.

The prosecutor asked the court past to try Okechukwu and Arinze summarily under Section 157 of the Criminal Procedure code and fixed a date for hearing on the  other two accused persons who pleaded  not guilty.

Magistrate Mimi Katsinal-Alu sentenced Okechukwu to four days imprisonment with N5,000 fine option, having been told that he has a criminal record in the past while Arinze was discharged for being a first time offender.

She, however, granted Code Anthony and Obiorah requests in the sum of N5,000 each with a surety in like sums  and adjourned the case to November 3 for hearing.
