Two accused of impersonating NURTW officials

THE police yesterday arraigned two persons before an Abuja Chief Magistrate Court for alleg­edly forging identity cards of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) and extorting money from motorists in Abuja, posing to be genu­ine members of the asso­ciation.

Alex Anyanwu and Toyin Kadir of Mabushi, Abuja, were arraigned for forgery and cheating, thereby contravening Section 312 of the Penal Code.

Prosecutor Simon Ibrahim informed the court that on January 21, one Silvanus Ibe of the NURTW, Wuse Abuja, reported at the Utako Police Station that the  accused persons forged the unions iden­tity cards and posed to be members of the union, adding that the accused  persons    also    collected money from some motorists without remitting it to the unions coffer.

When the charges were read to the accused each of them pleaded not guilty and requested for bail.

Chief Magistrate Azubuike Okeagu granted each of the accused persons bail in the sums of N200,000 with two reliable sureties each in like sums, who must reside within the court’s jurisdiction and swear to an affidavit that they will produce the accused persons in court on the adjourned date.

The case was adjourned to February 21 for hearing.
