Election is the formal process of selecting a person for public office.In most countries,Elections are held in the formal sense,But many of such elections are not competitive and the Electoral process is highly compromised.The opportunityto decide ”WHO WILL GOVERN” is vested on the public(people) to decide and make their choice about the policies,programs and future directions of government actions.Elections make a fundamental contribution to democratic governance,because DIRECT DEMOCRACY is impractical in most modern societies.In Nigeria,the body that has the constitutional capacity to conduct elections is the ”INDEPENDENT NATIONAL ELECTORAL COMMISSION”.It’s statutory duties includes the registration of political parties ,monitoring the organisation and operation of the political parties including their finances,arrangement/ conduct the registration of qualified persons to prepare,vote,maintain and revise the register of voters for the purpose of elections.In preparation for the 2011 election,the federal governmentand the law making institutions in the country,comprising of the senate and house of representatives have amended the electoral laws of the ountry,Also funds have neen released to the electoral commission to facilitate a credible election.However,more need to be done in the area of mass education and enlightment.This is to empower the people on their rights and the power of their votes….FELLOW NIGERIANS,AT HOME AND IN THE DIASPORA,STAND UP AND TAKE YOUR DESTINY IN YOUR HANDS….MAKE YOUR VOTE COUNT. .
