Family Issues brought to court

A young woman, Aisha Adamu of Wumba, near Apo village has asked an Abuja Area court sitting at Gudu to dissolve her 10 year old marriage with her husband Mohamadu Yadi for his lack of care to the family and inability to perform in his marital duties.

She also prayed the court to grant the custody of her three children to her estranged husband.

The woman informed the court that her husband has another wife whom he always gave attention, adding that he has abandoned her and her children and as well starved her of sex. Responding, the husband, Mohamadu Yadi, admitted that he stopped having sex with her because she had once embarrassed him before her friends by refusing to greet him when he came back from the market and as well left his house to somewhere to watch movies till 2am.

“When I asked her, she insulted me and stopped greeting me. I then decided not to eat her food nor have sex with her. After the incident, I reported the matter to her parents, they spoke to us but she refused to change and I stopped going to her bed. The next thing I saw after the reconciliatory meeting was the court summons.”

The presiding Judge, Abdu Bello, told the wife that she has no right under Islamic law to proclaim divorce except if her husband does so.

The husband then pronounced the divorce once (Saki Daya) and the court granted the divorce.

The court also ruled that she should observe three months idda period.
