Africa’s Greatest Eating Experience- The Carnivore

Most people that travel to Kenya end up flying to the nation’s capital Nairobi. After taking in the attractions and going on safaris most visitors return to their hotels and eat at the restaurants therein.

There is a place to eat in Nairobi – The Carnivore, rated as one of the 50 finest restaurants on earth. As the name suggests, it is a true meat lover’s paradise and considered as ‘Africa’s Greatest Eating Experience’.

Located on Langata Road, 10 minutes from the city centre and next to the Nairobi national park. Carnivore is a unique experience. It serves food using an ancient East African method.

While there is plenty of excellent beef, chicken, spicy lamb meatballs and pork on offer. The real attraction here is a superb range of adventurous meat. These include crocodile, ostrich meatballs, camel and ox testicles.

On arriving at this open-air meat specialty restaurant, you walk down a long ramp. Passing through the doors, the first thing you notice is a board with a list, this is your menu. The next thing you see is the huge Maasai barbecue with countless spits of roasting meat. The meat is roasted on traditional Maasai swords (skewers).

The waiters carry the swords around the restaurant, carving unlimited amounts of the prime meat onto sizzling cast plates.

On taking your seat you are confronted with a plate, napkin, cutlery and a flag. The flag is very important because once you put it upright the waiters know you are ready to be served and as long as the flag remains up,you continue to be served.

The waiter comes to your table waving huge Maasai spears with hunks of meat. Your waiter tells you what meat it is and if you’re interested, plunks the end of the spear on your plate and carves away. He will ask you how you like your meat cooked – it comes in two varieties; flame licked or scorched and raw. If you insist the waiter will return the meat to the barbecue and cook it for a little longer.

A wide selection of salads, vegetable side dishes and a variety of exotic sauces accompany the meat feast. Dessert and coffee follow this. The full meal including a soup course is a flat price.

When you have eaten to your fill, simply lower your flag and the waiters will leave you alone. The carnivore is an eat-as-much-as you-can restaurant.

The Carnivore is also home to the Simba Saloon, a popular nightclub and disco.

Informal outdoor atmosphere, snacks and outstanding entertainment ensure a vibrant and exciting night out.
