Cross River State is situated in the South South part of Nigeria and the capital Calabar is known for its friendly people, culinary skills, beautiful women and its eco friendly and clean environment.
Started in December 2004 by the then governor of Cross River State, Mr. Donald Duke, the carnival aims to bring to limelight the local heritage and culture while strengthening locals’ capacity to contribute to economic development. The festival which is an annual event boasts of various events which include Traditional dances, Fashion shows, Boat regatta, Christmas village, Calabar Carnival, Ekpe festival and Music performances by local and international artists.
In 2009, the Cross River State Tourism Board and the state Carnival Commission estimated about 3 million participants but record of attendance on December 27th showed that the number of participants was way above the estimate.
The Carnival runs throughout the month of December with the peak being the 26th and 27th when the children street carnival and the main Calabar Carnival are held respectively. During the festival different bands go through various routes in Calabar with their final destination being J. U. Esuene Stadium where the grand performance is done. In all this, cultural content is heightened to play up trado-originality and cultural African content.
Each year has experienced greater participation by delegates from other states, countries and even corporate organisations while attracting top dignitaries, members of the diplomatic core, tourists and Nigerians alike.
