GOOD GOVERNANCE AND THE NIGERIAN PRESS

The key attributes of good governance are accountability, responsibility, transparency, responsiveness, participation and efficiency in administration and developmental-oriented budgets and government actions.Moreso, good governance is powered by tht delivery of high quality services to the people through adequate productivity.Good governance is centered on effective and transparent leadership that produces results which together transform the socio-economic conditions of  a nation. In articulating good governance in Nigeria, the press in its capacity hasa vital role to play in the collection, dissemination and promotion of ideas, and enlightening the peopleon their rights, duties, obligations. The functions of the press in this structure,is centered on being the watch dog of the society and giving a definition on monitoring events both in the bureaucratic and political class. In this regard, the press is a tool channeled towards the country’s development by striving to promote social, political and economic goals of the country. It is an attestable truth that most of the highly developed countries of the world today owe their geatness and achievements to the involement and contribution of the press. Therefore,it becomes necessary for the nigerian press to reposition itself with renewed commitiment to promoting transparent, responsible and good governance through its institution.Today in Nigeria, the media industry has established landmarks with international recongnition. It is this order, that has liberalised the electronic media, and ushered in private-owne electronic media outfits all over the country. The provisions of Section 22(1)of the 1999 constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria as regards the press is to at all times be upholding the fundamental objectives of the constitution and responsiblity as well as accountability of the governments to the people.I must submit, that at a time like this when CORRUPTION of the bureaucratic and political class has plunged the nation into endless nightmare of mass poverty and under development,Where public officials(elected and appointed)inflate cost of public goods and services, missapproriate public funds to personal benefits and enrichment, even inspite of campaigns against corrupt practices. It becomes imperative, that the press employ INVESTIGATIVE JOURNALISM as infered in developed societies to relate adequate fact and evidence to the police and to public knowledge. The Nigeria press, must constitute itself into a powerful instrument and agency for fetting and executing its agenda for its target audience.Although such external factors such as limitation of access to official information, poor welfare package for the journalist despite the risky nature of the job, influence of media proprietor over news and editorial formulation, limited environment of free media practice, impactation of strapped economy on media and intimidation of the press which often include DEATH THREATS,must be address so as to revive and restore the pride of the media industry in Nigeria.
