Choosing your Company
Harnessing the power of positive peer pressure
Statisti cs show that marijuana use in adolescents has risen 275% in the past 6years, 30% of teens get to taste cigarettes and 74.3% taste alcohol first in school. When we were growing up, I remember how we were warned against it, its called peer pressure. It was all based on the logical deduction that we not only attract our kind, but we can be easily “mutated” and made to fit into the mold of our associations. The negative influence that was consistently imposed on a young child was generally termed peer pressure, but more accurately, it should be called negative peer pressure, for peer pressure could be positive.
Positive Peer Pressure
The impact of negative peer pressure in enormous, but have we every considered the immense benefits of what we call peer pressure, the constant weight of demand placed on us by those around us? If this is used positively, it could help a person or two become better.
The impact of peer pressure
Peer pressure tries to force a person to conform to a set of standards common to a group, most times against the person’s natural tendencies. Thinking positively, imagine what would happen to a poor student who suddenly makes friends with the top three in the class. He has two options, fall in or fall out. He either joins the bookworms and feed on books like they do, or go back to his vomit. This is peer pressure at its best.
Imagine a young man suddenly moving with the upper echelon in his career path, he is forced to dine where they dine, read what they read, if he must have a meaningful conversation with them and ultimately, think as they think. Now with little talking, the sheer pressure of those around him, forces this young man to take actions to fit into his new environment.
