Court jails ‘Keke Napep’ Driver for cheating
An Abuja Magistrate Court last Thursday sentenced a 30-year-old commercial tricycle (keke napep) driver to six weeks imprisonment for cheating one Abdulhazes Nura of Jabi, Abuja.
Haruna Adam of NEPA Quarters Abuja, was convicted for criminal breach of trust and cheating, offences contrary to Sections 312 and 322 of the Penal Code.
Police prosecutor, Simon Ibrahim, told the court that on January 11, one Abdulhazes reported at Utako Police Station that on January 6, he entrusted his tricycle to the accused for commercial purposes with an agreement that the accused will remit N2,000 to him on daily basis.
The prosecutor said the accused used the tricycle for five days and refused to remit 11,000 collected for the period to the complainant until he was arrested by the police.
When the charges were read to accused, he pleaded guilty and begged for leniency.
Magistrate Fatima Mallo sentenced the accused to two weeks imprisonment or a fine option of N1,000 for the first count and another one month imprisonment or fine of N1,000 for the second count charge.
The magistrate also ruled that the accused should pay a compensation of N11,000 to the nominal complainant.
