Driver jailed for stealing Lawyer’s handset
A man who stole a lawyer’s BlackBerry cell phone inside the premises of the Supreme Court complex in Abuja was yesterday sentenced to six months imprisonment.
The 35 year old driver, Ibrahim Audu Jibrin of Gwagwalada, is that Abuja, was convicted for criminal trespass and theft, offences punishable under Section 348 and 288 of the Penal Code.
Police prosecutor, Inspector Philips Akogwu, informed the court that on January 12, one Barrister Chukwudi Ugwu, accompanied by Deputy Superintendent of Police Shettima Abba, reported to the police that the accused trespassed into the court premises and stole the handset belonging to the lawyer.
He said the stolen handset was recovered from the accused during police investigation.
When the two-count-charge was read to the accused person, he pleaded guilty and begged for leniency, while the prosecutor asked the court to try him summarily under Section 157 of the Criminal Procedure Code.
Magistrate Shuaibu Ahmed sentenced the accused to six months imprisonment with fine option of N2,000.
