Mechanic in Court over pedestrian’s death

The police in Abuja yesterday arraigned a mechanic, Onyeka Ubesie, before an Abuja Magis­trates Court for allegedly driving without a license and killing a pedestrian in the process.

Ubesie of Dutse village in the FCT was accused of contravening Sections 27 and 10(1) of Road Traffic Act.

Police prosecutor, Frank Omale, informed the court that on December 21, 2010, the accused drove a Mercedes Benz car with registration  number AX 465 RBC along Lokogoma Expressway in a danger­ous manned and knocked down a pedestrian, Abubakar Haruna, who died on the spot.

When the two-count charge was read to the accused, he pleaded not guilty and requested for bail, which was not opposed by the prosecutor.

Magistrate Ahmed Shuaibu granted the accused bailinthesumof,N500,000

with a surety in like sum, who must reside within the court’s jurisdiction.

The case was adjourned to February 16 for hearing.
