Imagine This Man, flogging a Lady
A 29-year-old electrician was yesterday sentenced to one month imprisonment for flogging one Juliet Godwin with a cane.
The accused, Daniel Nyitor, of no fixed address was said to have committed the offence on October 8, 2010 at a garden in Wuse district.
The prosecutor, Adamu Abdullahi, had earlier told the court that the complainant reported to the police that the accused criminally flogged her with cane, adding that she sustained injuries all over her body.
He said the offence is punishable under Sections 265 and 241 of the Penal Code.
The accused pleaded guilty to the charges and begged the court to temper justice with mercy, saying that he flogged the lady out of annoyance.
“I came to Abuja to collect my late father’s entitlement. When I went to the garden where I sleep at night because I don’t have a place to sleep, I met her and other ladies standing there. So when I asked them to move away from the place so that I could sleep, she started insulting my mother so I flogged her with cane. I have never done it before and will never do it again,” he pleaded.
The prosecutor urged the court to try the accused summarily under Sections 157 of the Criminal Procedure Code.
Magistrate Vera Tom Tukura sentenced the accused to one month imprisonment or to pay N1, 000 as fine.
