Police detain 5 officers over extortion
FIVE police officers have been detained for extorting money from motorists at check points in Damaturu, Yobe State, the state’s Commissioner of Police, Lawal Tanko, has said.
He told journalists after leading the checkpoints monitoring team that made the arrests.
He said the officers would be tried and dismissed if found culpable. “Five police officers are now in detention for collecting money from motorists and would be tried, and if found guilty, they would be dismissed,” he said.
He said the state’s command would not tolerate indiscipline in the face of the current security challenges facing the command.
He also disclosed the resolve of the command to continue to monitor its officers at checkpoints and other duty posts.
He said the action was in line with the vision of the new Inspector General of Police Muhammad Dahiru Abubakar, who has vowed to cleanse the force of irresponsible officers.
